XL2000: CELL Function with "filename" No Longer Volatile

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, the CELL worksheet function may not update automatically.

NOTE: This is different behavior from earlier versions of Microsoft Excel.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do the following:

• You use the CELL function with "filename" for the info_type argument.

-and-

• You click Save As on the File menu and change the file name, file type, or file location so that the path or file name changes.

WORKAROUND

Use either one of the following methods to work around this problem:

Press F9 to update the CELL worksheet function.

-or-

Recalculate using the Tools menu:

1. On the Tools menu, click Options.



2. Click the Calculation tab.



3. Click Calc Now (F9).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
