SYMPTOMS
You cannot use the ALT key to drag a drawing object or an AutoShape from one worksheet to another in the same workbook.
NOTE: In contrast, you can drag a selection of cells from one worksheet to another.
WORKAROUND
To move a drawing object or an AutoShape from one worksheet to another in
the same workbook, use either of the following methods.
Method 1: Use a Cut and Paste Operation
- Select the drawing object or AutoShape.
- On the Edit menu, click Cut.
- Click the tab for the worksheet on which you want to place the object.
- On the Edit menu, click Paste.
Method 2: Arrange the Worksheet in Two Windows
- On the Window menu, click New Window.
A new window with a copy of the workbook appears. For example, if the
active workbook in step 1 is called Book1.xls, Excel creates
two windows called Book1.xls:1 and Book1.xls:2.
- On the Window menu, click Arrange.
- In the Arrange Windows dialog box, click Tiled, and then click OK.
- In the second window, click the tab of the worksheet on which you want to place the drawing object.
- Activate the first window.
- In the first window, hold down the ALT key and drag the drawing
object to the second window. Release the ALT key.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed
at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION
You can drag a range of cells from one worksheet to another in the same workbook by pressing the ALT key while you drag the cells. For example, if you want to drag cells A1:A3 from Sheet1 to Sheet2, follow these steps:
- Select cells A1:A3 on Sheet1.
- Hold down the ALT key, and drag the range of cells on top of the tab for Sheet2.
When the sheet tab changes color, the sheet is active. Release the ALT key.
- Drag the cells to the location you want on Sheet2.
- Release the mouse button to paste the cells.
This functionality does not apply when trying to drag drawing objects
between worksheets.
