  • Microsoft Excel 2000

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS

When you open an embedded Excel document that contains a Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) Link, the link does not automatically update. Additionally, the following problems occur.

Update Now

When you click Update Now in the Links dialog box to force the DDE link to update, the link still does not continue to automatically update.

Update Remote References

When you open the document containing the Excel worksheet object, the Update remote references check box is not selected although you had previously saved the document with this option selected.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you copy or insert an Excel worksheet object into another document, such as a Microsoft Word document, and the Excel object contains a DDE link.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To correct this problem, add the EmbedUpdateRemoteReferences registry entry to the Excel Options subkey. To add this new registry entry:

  1. On the Start menu, click Run. In the Open box, type regedit and press RETURN to start Registry Editor.

  2. In the left pane of Registry Editor, locate and select the following subkey (folder):

  3. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Excel\Options
  4. On the Edit menu, point to New and then click DWORD Value.

  5. Type EmbedUpdateRemoteReferences, and then press ENTER.

  6. Double-click the EmbedUpdateRemoteReferences icon.

  7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

  8. Quit Registry Editor.

To update the embedded Excel object, double-click the worksheet object. When the following dialog box appears, click Yes.
The workbook you opened contains automatic links to information in another workbook. Do you want to update this workbook with changes made to the other workbook?
When you click Yes, the DDE link continues to automatically update.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
