XL2000: Crash When Clicking OK in Options Dialog Box

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you click OK in the Options dialog box, you may receive the following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you receive the following error message:
EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module EXCEL.EXE at 015f:301d1e43


CAUSE

This problem may occur when you do the following:

  • You create a chart that shows data labels.
  • You copy the chart, switch to another program, and use a Paste Link operation to paste the chart.
  • In Excel, you open the Options dialog box, select or clear any option on the Edit tab, and click OK.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, close the program where you pasted the chart before you change any options on the Edit tab in Excel.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
