XL2000: Undoing Change to Chart after Freezing Pane Causes Invalid Page Fault

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to undo an action that you performed on a chart object, such as undoing a move (click Undo Move on the Edit menu), you may receive the following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, you receive the following additional information:
EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module EXCEL.EXE at 015f:30042d24.
When you click Close, you may receive another illegal operation error message. And when you click Details, you receive the following additional information:
EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module EXCEL.EXE at 015f:300421fd.
You may receive similar errors if you attempt to undo other changes you have made to a chart object. This behavior is not known to occur with other object types.


CAUSE

This error message occurs when you perform the following steps in the order shown:

  1. Insert a chart object.


  2. Move or change an item on the chart object.


  3. Switch to another sheet in the workbook.


  4. On the Window menu, click Freeze Panes.


  5. Attempt to undo the change you made in step 2.



WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, vary your steps from those shown in the "Cause" section of this article. For example, if you unfreeze the window pane before you undo the change, you will not receive the error message.

Also, this problem will not occur if you switch back to the sheet on which you are undoing the action. For example, if you are undoing an action on Sheet2, switch to Sheet2 before you click Undo.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
