XL2000: "Insert Copied Cells" Menu Item Missing After Copy

ID: Q215710

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 2000

SYMPTOMS

After you copy a range of cells, the Copied Cells menu item may be missing from the Insert menu. The Insert Copied Cells menu item is also missing on the shortcut menu when you right-click a cell.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you do either of the following after the copy operation:

  • You paste the copied selection.

    -or-

  • You use the Copied Cells menu item on the Insert menu, or the Insert Copied Cells shortcut menu item.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, select the range, hold down CTRL+SHIFT, click the edge of the selection, and drag the selection to copy it. You need to reselect the cells to repeat the action.

You do not get an Insert Paste dialog box that allows you to choose whether to move cells to the right or down. However, you can make this choice by positioning the mouse and watching the insertion icon. A vertical bar indicates that cells will be moved to the right. A horizontal bar indicates that cells will be moved down.

MORE INFORMATION

Although the menu items are missing, the copied cell information is still on the Clipboard. The Paste menu item is still available and you can continue to paste the copied selection.
