SYMPTOMSIf you have a chart based on data from a worksheet and then try to change the source data to be from a PivotTable report, you may receive the following error message: You are unable to change the source to the PivotTable data. CAUSEThis problem may occur if the type of chart you are working with is an XY (Scatter), Bubble, or Stock chart. You cannot use an XY (Scatter), Bubble, or Stock chart type with data from a PivotTable. WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, follow these steps:

MORE INFORMATIONIf you try to make a chart directly from a PivotTable and select XY (Scatter), Bubble, or Stock as the chart type, you receive the following error message: If you open a workbook created in an earlier version of Excel with a PivotTable report and a chart made from that PivotTable, you can change the Chart Type to XY (Scatter), Bubble, or Stock chart without receiving an error message. However, if you try to change the source to the PivotTable, you will receive the message listed in the "Symptoms" section.
