XL2000: Error Changing Chart Source from Worksheet Data to PivotTable

ID: Q215900

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 2000

SYMPTOMS

If you have a chart based on data from a worksheet and then try to change the source data to be from a PivotTable report, you may receive the following error message:

The chart type you have selected cannot be used for a PivotChart report, which is a chart created with PivotTable data. Please select a range that does not include a PivotTable report.
You are unable to change the source to the PivotTable data.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the type of chart you are working with is an XY (Scatter), Bubble, or Stock chart. You cannot use an XY (Scatter), Bubble, or Stock chart type with data from a PivotTable.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Copy the entire PivotTable.

  2. Select a cell in a different part of the worksheet.

  3. On the Edit menu, click Paste Special.

  4. Click Values in the Paste Special dialog box.

  5. Click OK.

When you try to change the source data for your chart, change it to this pasted range instead of the PivotTable from which the pasted data originated.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

If you try to make a chart directly from a PivotTable and select XY (Scatter), Bubble, or Stock as the chart type, you receive the following error message:

You cannot use an XY (Scatter), Bubble, or Stock chart type with a chart that has been created from PivotTable data. Please select a different chart type.
If you open a workbook created in an earlier version of Excel with a PivotTable report and a chart made from that PivotTable, you can change the Chart Type to XY (Scatter), Bubble, or Stock chart without receiving an error message. However, if you try to change the source to the PivotTable, you will receive the message listed in the "Symptoms" section.
