XL2000: Excel 97 Custom Toolbars Not Available in Excel 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade from Microsoft Excel 97 to Excel 2000, your custom toolbars and toolbar customizations are no longer available.


CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You have custom toolbars or toolbar customizations in Microsoft Excel 97.

    -and-

  • You upgrade to Microsoft Excel 2000.


RESOLUTION

To migrate the custom toolbars from Microsoft Excel 97 to Microsoft Excel 2000, manually open the toolbar file (*.xlb) which contains the customization information. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Start Microsoft Excel.


  2. On the File menu, click Open.


  3. In the Look in list, click your startup disk (usually lettered C:) and double-click the folder where Microsoft Windows is installed (usually the Windows folder).


  4. Depending on which file is available, select one of the following files and click Open:


  5. Excel8.xlb

    -or-

    username8.xlb

    where username is your logon name.
  6. Click Open.


  7. Microsoft Excel will merge the custom toolbars and toolbar customizations with the current toolbars.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
