XL2000: Odd Display in Browser If Font Size Less Than 8 Points

SYMPTOMS

If you create a web page in Excel that uses a font size less than 8 points, you may experience one of the following behaviors when viewing the page in a Web browser:

• Text may wrap incorrectly.



• Text may be truncated.



• Text may appear crunched.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Excel sizes the font differently than the web browser does. For example, when you use a font size less than 8 points, Excel attempts to approximate the font size, making it correct when it is printed or being displayed in print preview. When Excel saves the file, it saves the font information in the file. The results you see when viewing the page in a browser depend on the web browser you are using. For example, Microsoft Internet Explorer displays the text in the font size you specified in Excel. However, when it sizes the text, it may no longer fit within the column width you specified in Excel and so Internet Explorer may wrap or truncate the text. Because other browsers may not size the font, you will see these behaviors described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior use a larger font size. Note that small fonts are difficult for some people to read. By using a larger font size you will improve the readability of your web page.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
