On a Macintosh computer, if you try to open a Microsoft Excel 2000 workbook published as a Web page with interactivity, you may receive the following error message at the top of the window:

To use this Web page interactively you must have Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 or later and the Microsoft Office Web Core components. See the Microsoft Office Web site for more information.
And the workbook does not appear.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if both of the following conditions are true:

  • You open the Web page using a Web browser similar to Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 (or later) for the Macintosh.

    -and-

  • In Excel for Windows, you saved the workbook as a Web page with interactivity.
No version of Microsoft Internet Explorer for the Macintosh presently supports ActiveX controls in an HTML document. Because ActiveX controls are included in a Web page saved with interactivity, you cannot open the file on a Macintosh.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The error message stated in the "Symptoms" section is part of the HTML code in the document. Because this code was not written to consider any platform other than Microsoft Windows, this error message may be confusing when you open the file on platforms other than Microsoft Windows.
