XL2000: "Cannot quit EXCEL.EXE" and Can't Log Off from Windows NT If Excel File Open in Internet Explorer

SYMPTOMS

If you open a Microsoft Excel workbook as an active document (in-place) within Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then attempt to log off from Windows NT, you cannot log off and Excel returns the following error message:

Cannot quit EXCEL.EXE.

EXCEL.EXE continues running, although no user interface is present. You can only observe and end Excel through Task Manager or a similar tool in Windows NT.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you edit but do not save the workbook, before attempting to log off.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, save your work and then quit every instance of Excel running within Internet Explorer. Then, try to log off again.

To avoid this problem, do not run Microsoft Excel for active documents within Internet Explorer. Instead, open a separate instance of Excel.exe when you need to open a hyperlink to an Excel file.
