XL2000: Labels on X-Axis of XY (Scatter) Chart Distorted When Rotated 90 Degrees
ID: Q236298

The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMS
In an xy (scatter) chart that uses x-axis labels, the x-axis labels may be distorted, truncated, or missing.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
- You create an xy (scatter) chart or open one created in an earlier version of Microsoft Excel.
-and-
- The alignment of text on the x-axis is rotated 90 degrees in either direction. (Double click the Value (X) axis, and then click the Alignment tab.)
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use either of the following methods.
Method 1: Set Alignment to Other Than 90 Degrees
- On the chart, click to select the Value (X) axis.
- On the Format menu, click Selected Axis, and then click the Alignment tab.
- In the Degrees box, change 90 to another value such as 89 or 88 (it may be negative).
Method 2: Use Text Labels Instead of Scale Labels
- On the chart, click to select the Value (X) axis.
- On the Format menu, click Selected Axis, and then click the Number tab.
- Under Category, click Custom. Then, in the Type box, type ;;; and click OK to hide the distorted labels.
- To create some space below the plot area, click Chart Options on the Chart menu. On the Titles tab, type a space in the Value (X) axis box and click OK.
- To expand the space, with the blank x-axis title selected, click Selected Axis Title on the Format menu. On the Font tab, increase the Size to a larger number, such as 20, and click OK.
- To create a new text box in which to type the appropriate label, click the chart area so that the x-axis title box is no longer selected. Then, click in the formula bar; type the label, and press ENTER. Move the text box containing the label into the approximate position below the plot area.
- With the text box still selected, click Selected Object on the Format menu. On the Alignment tab, click the vertical type under Orientation and click OK.
NOTE: If you do not see the Alignment tab, you may have clicked inside the text box. To prevent this, click the frame around the text box so there is no insertion point visible inside the text box, and then click Selected Object on the Format menu.
- Continue making text boxes until you have all the appropriate labels.
NOTE: The text box changes to horizontal orientation while you edit it, but it does switch back to vertical orientation when it is no longer selected. Although some adjustment and moving of text boxes is necessary, you can use this method to approximate an x-axis with 90 degree label orientation.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed
at the beginning of this article.
