XL97: Drawing Object Names Increment Incorrectly

SYMPTOMS

The name of a drawing object that appears in the Name Box appears to increment incorrectly after you draw an object on a worksheet.

CAUSE

When Microsoft Excel names a drawing object on a worksheet, it uses a name that includes a number. This number is incremented by one digit each time you create a drawing object. When you add a drawing object (for example, a rectangle) to a worksheet, Microsoft Excel assigns a name to the object (for example, "Rectangle 1"), which is displayed in the Name Box. When you create another drawing object on the same worksheet (for example, an oval), Microsoft Excel assigns a name that includes a number that is one greater than the number used to name the first object (for example, "Oval 2").

In Microsoft Excel 97, some shapes, such as the line object, do not use a predefined size. Shapes without a predefined size require that you draw the shape with the pointer. If you click a drawing shape on the Drawing toolbar but do not draw the shape, the naming counter is incremented.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
