XL97: Embedded Links to Other Workbooks Cause Error When Exiting

SYMPTOMS

When you quit Microsoft Excel 97, you may receive the following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module EXCEL.EXE at 014f:30095945.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:

• In Microsoft Excel 97, you open a workbook that contains an embedded link to another workbook.


-and-


• When you open the workbook, you click Yes when you are prompted to update the workbook with changes made to the other workbook.

• You do not save and/or close the workbook before you exit Microsoft Excel 97.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, save and/or close any workbooks that contain embedded links to other workbooks before you quit Microsoft Excel 97.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem no longer occurs in Microsoft Excel 2000.

In Microsoft Excel 97 workbooks, you can create embedded links to other documents, including other workbooks, by using the Object dialog box (click Object on the Insert menu).
