XL97: Rotated Text May Not Be Visible

SYMPTOMS

If you rotate text in a cell, the text may not be visible in a worksheet.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you specify a small angle rotation (between approximately -5 and 5 degrees, depending on the cell location) and you use cell borders.

When you rotate cell text and you use any cell border, the text is repositioned to fit in the center of an imaginary parallelogram with sides that are rotated at the same angle as the cell text. This may cause the text to appear on top of other cells in the worksheet. When the angle is small enough, the center of the imaginary parallelogram may be so far from the actual cell that the text is positioned off the screen.

RESOLUTION

To rotate cell text at very small angles, do not use any of the cell borders. If you want to use cell borders, increase the angle of rotation (more negative or more positive) so that the slope of the sides of the parallelogram is not as steep. As you increase the angle of the rotated text, it moves closer to the actual cell location.

STATUS

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Excel.
