XL97: Internet Assistant Wizard Doesn't Recognize All Files

ID: Q170227

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Internet Assistant Wizard in Microsoft Excel 97, some Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) files may appear to be missing.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you use the Internet Assistant Wizard to:

  • Create an HTML file.

  • -or-

  • Insert the converted data into an existing HTML file.

The problem occurs because the Internet Assistant Wizard uses *.htm as the default file type. This default may cause *.html files to be excluded from the list of files.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

If you want to insert converted data into an existing HTML file, follow

  1. On the File menu, click Save As HTML.

  2. Make the changes you want in step 1 of the wizard and click Next.

  3. Click "Insert the converted data into an existing HTML file..." and click Next.

  4. Click Browse.

  5. In the File Name box, type *.* and press ENTER.

This forces the "Select your HTML file" dialog box to display all files.

NOTE: The Files Of Type list does not include All Files.

Method 2

If you want to create an independent HTML file with an existing file name (by replacing the existing file), follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click Save As HTML.

  2. Make the changes you want in step 1 of the wizard and click Next.

  3. Click "Create an independent, ready to view HTML document..." and click Next.

  4. Make the changes you want in step 3 of the wizard and click Next.

NOTE: In step 4 of the wizard, you can create a new file with the *.html file extension by typing the l at the end of the file path.

  5. Click Browse.

  6. In the File Name box, type *.* and press ENTER.

This forces the "Save your HTML document as" dialog box to display all files.

NOTE: The Save As Type list does not include All Files.
