VBE: User-Defined Functions Are Calculated Incorrectly

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Function Wizard to enter a formula containing a user- defined function in a cell, the formula may be calculated more than once.


CAUSE

A user-defined function is calculated multiple times in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows if the following conditions are true:

  • The user-defined function is created in Visual Basic for Applications.


  • -and-

  • The user-defined function is inserted into the spreadsheet with the Function Wizard.


Note that this behavior does not occur if the user-defined function is entered directly in a cell in a worksheet.


RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do not use the Function Wizard to insert the custom function.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows 98.
