XL97: Embedded Worksheet Object Stops After Running Macro

SYMPTOMS

When you run a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications macro in a Microsoft Excel workbook that is embedded in a Microsoft Word document, you may receive one of the following error messages.

Microsoft Windows 95/98

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you receive the following error message:
EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module EXCEL.EXE at 0137:304dec2d.

Microsoft Windows NT

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.
Microsoft Excel 97 quits, and Microsoft Word 97 stops responding (hangs).


CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:

  • You insert a Microsoft Excel Worksheet object into a Microsoft Word document.


  • -and-

  • You add a Visual Basic macro to the Excel workbook that adds a custom view to the workbook.


  • -and-

  • You run the macro.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem no longer occurs in Microsoft Excel 2000.

The following macro creates a new custom view in Microsoft Excel 97 and fails when the macro is run from a Microsoft Excel 97 worksheet object that is embedded in a Microsoft Word 97 document:

   Sub My_View()

       ActiveWorkbook.CustomViews.Add ViewName:="test"

   End Sub
