XL97: Changing Alignment and Indent Causes Text to Disappear

SYMPTOMS

When you enter data in a cell, you may not be able to see the data in the cell. However, you can see the data in the formula bar.


CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You change the horizontal alignment of the cell to left alignment and specify an indent value that is greater than the length of the string that is in the cell.


  • -and-

  • You change the vertical alignment of the cell to justified alignment.



WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, do not set the indent to a value greater than the number of characters in the cell.


STATUS

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Excel 97.
