XL97: Invalid Page Fault Closing WK4 File

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 97, when you open and then close a workbook that was saved in WK4 (1-2-3) format, you may receive the following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

If you click Details, an error message similar to the following appears:

Excel caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 0000:01cf0004

CAUSE

This problem occurs only when you perform the following steps:

You group two OLE objects together on a worksheet.

You then save the workbook in WK4 (1-2-3) file format.

You then close the workbook.

You then reopen and then close the workbook.

WORKAROUND

To prevent this issue from occurring, do not group OLE objects if you are going to save in WK4 (1-2-3) format.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 97.
