XL97: Refreshing PivotTable Causes Excel to Quit Unexpectedly

SYMPTOMS

When you refresh a PivotTable in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows, you may receive one of the following error messages.

Windows 95

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following:
EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module Excel.exe at 0137:303f7c13.

Windows NT

An application error has occurred and an application log is being generated.
EXCEL.exe
Exception: access violation(0xc0000005), Address: 0x303f6bd6
And then Excel quits.


CAUSE

You may receive either of the errors listed in the "Symptoms" section if all of the following are true:

  • Your PivotTable is getting its data from an external data source.


  • -and-

  • The external data source is an Access database.


  • -and-

  • You have the Optimize Memory option enabled in the PivotTable Options dialog box.



RESOLUTION

To prevent these errors from occurring when you refresh a PivotTable, disable the Optimize Memory option in the PivotTable Options dialog box.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows. This problem no longer occurs in Microsoft Excel 2000.
