XL97: CELL Function with "filename" No Longer Volatile

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows


SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows, the CELL worksheet function may not update automatically.

NOTE: This is different behavior from earlier versions of Microsoft Excel.


CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do the following:

  • You use the CELL function with "filename" for the info_type argument.


  • -and-

  • You click Save As on the File menu and change the file name, file type, or file location so that the complete path and file name changes.



WORKAROUND

Use either one of the following methods to work around this problem:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.


  2. Click the Calculation tab.


  3. Click the Calc Now button.


-or-

Press F9 to update the CELL worksheet function.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows.
