XL97: Worksheet Not Recalculated with More Than 240 Formulas in Same Row

SYMPTOMS

When you calculate values in your Microsoft Excel worksheet, some cells may not be automatically recalculated.


CAUSE

This problem may occur when you enter the same formula in more than 240 columns in the same row.


RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, obtain and install Microsoft Office 97, Service Release 2 (SR-2).

To temporarily work around this problem, press CTRL+ALT+F9 to completely recalculate all open workbooks in Microsoft Excel.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2).

Example of the Problem

To see an example of the problem, follow these steps:

  1. Save and close any open workbooks and create a new workbook.


  2. On the Edit menu, click Go To. In the Go To dialog box, type B3:IH3 in the Reference box, and then click OK.


  3. Type the following formula, and then press CTRL+ENTER:
    
          =B1+B2 
    Note that the formula is entered into the range B3:IH3.


  4. Save, and then close the file.


  5. Open the file that you saved in step 4.


  6. On the Edit menu, click Go To. In the Go To dialog box, type B2:IH2 in the Reference box, and then click OK.


  7. Type the following value, and then press CTRL+ENTER:
    1


If you scroll to the right, you will see that cells HR3:IH3 have not been recalculated.
