XL97: 3-D Surface Chart Lines May Not Follow Slope of Data

ID: Q200816

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you create a 3-D surface chart, it may have unexpected peaks or valleys and may not be as smooth as expected.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when any of the following conditions are true:

  • The data is not part of a regular sequential series.

    -or-

  • The data is not derived from mathematical formulas.

    -or-

  • The major unit on the scale is different from the increments in the data.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The points and plot of each data point on the grid seem to be correct, but the way they are connected between points create patterns that are often not as smooth as expected. This is most often observable when the chart is a surface type with a contour sub-type.
