XL97: Cannot Use New Keyword to Create Workbook Object

SYMPTOMS

If you use the New keyword to create a Workbook object using Automation, you may receive the following error message:

Run-time error '429':
ActiveX component can't create object


WORKAROUND

To create a Microsoft Excel Workbook object through Automation, use the CreateObject function.

The following example illustrates how to create a Microsoft Excel Workbook object through Automation:

  1. Start Microsoft Word 98.


  2. Start the Visual Basic Editor (press OPTION+F11).


  3. On the Insert menu, click Module.


  4. On the Tools menu, click References. Select "Microsoft Excel 8.0 Object Library" in the Available References list box, and then click OK.


  5. Enter the following code into the Visual Basic module:
    
          Sub WorkAround()
              Dim objXL As Object
    
              ' Create a new Excel workbook.
              Set objXL = CreateObject("excel.sheet")
    
              ' Display the version number of Microsoft Excel.
              MsgBox objXL.Parent.Version
    
              ' Close Microsoft Excel.
              Set objXL = Nothing
          End Sub 


  6. Run the WorkAround subroutine.


Note that a message box is displayed with the version number of your copy of Microsoft Excel.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
