XL97: How to Programmatically Change the Project Name

ID: Q184099

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SUMMARY

By default, when you open a new workbook in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, the Name property for the workbook project is "VBAProject" (without the quotation marks). This naming convention may cause a problem if you manually or programmatically attempt to create a reference from one project to another. If you try to create a reference between two projects that have the same Name property, you receive the following error message:

Name conflicts with existing module, project, or object library
You can change the Name property for a project in the Visual Basic Editor Properties window in the Visual Basic Editor or you can programmatically change the Name property. This article includes sample macro code that changes the Name property of a project.

To programmatically change the Name property of a project, follow these steps:

  1. Close and save any open workbooks.

  2. Open a new workbook and start the Visual Basic Editor (press OPTION+F11).

  3. On the Insert menu, click Module.

  4. In the module sheet, type the following code:

          Sub Change_Name()

NewName = InputBox("Type your new project name")

If NewName <> "" Then 'You did not click Cancel in the InputBox
                  Application.VBE.VBProjects("VBAProject").Name = NewName
              End If

          End Sub

  5. Run the Change_Name macro.

  6. When you are prompted, type a name for the project and click OK.

The Name property for the project is changed to the name you typed in the input box.
