XL98: HTTP or FTP Path to Workbook Is Unchanged After Save As

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, if you open a workbook on a Web site by using the Address box of the Web toolbar and then save the workbook to another location, Microsoft Excel 98 displays the incorrect path to the workbook in the following situations:

  • You use one of the following commands in a macro or in the Immediate window of the Microsoft Visual Basic Editor:
    
          ActiveWorkbook.Path
          ActiveWorkbook.FullName 


  • You copy a range of cells in the workbook and click Paste As Hyperlink on the Edit menu.


  • You copy a range of cells in the workbook, switch to Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition, and then click Paste Link in the Paste Special dialog box.


NOTE: This problem occurs only when you open the workbook by using the HTTP or FTP protocol.


CAUSE

The problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You open a workbook from a Web site by typing the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) in the Address box of the Web toolbar (for example, http://example.microsoft.com/MyWorkbook).


  • -and-

  • You click Save As on the File menu and save the file to your hard disk.



WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, close the workbook and reopen the workbook.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.
