XL98: "Error in loading DLL" Opening Workbook with Macros

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition workbook or template that contains Visual Basic for Applications modules, you may receive the following error message

Error in loading DLL
and you cannot open the workbook.

NOTE: This error message may also appear if the workbook has been created in Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0, and the workbook contains module sheets.


CAUSE

You may receive the error message in Excel 98 if either of the following conditions is true:

  • The Type Libraries folder is missing from the Extensions folder.

    -or-


  • The files in the Type Libraries folder are the incorrect version or are corrupted.



RESOLUTION

If the Type Libraries folder is missing, or if the files in the folder are the wrong version or are corrupted, drag a new copy of this folder from the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition compact disc (CD) into the Extensions folder. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Quit Microsoft Excel and insert the Microsoft Office 98 CD.


  2. Open the Office Custom Install folder on the root directory of the CD.


  3. Open the Installer Files folder.


  4. If a Type Libraries folder exists in the System Folder:Extensions folder, drag it to the Desktop.


  5. Drag the Type Libraries folder from the Installer Files folder into the System Folder:Extensions folder on your hard disk.


  6. Drag the Excel Settings (8) file from the System Folder:Preferences folder to the desktop.


  7. Restart Microsoft Excel.


You can open the workbook that contains a module without receiving the error message.

However, if you continue to receive the error message after you complete the previous steps, follow these steps:
  1. Close any running programs.


  2. Move the following files from the System Folder:Preferences folder to the Trash:
    Office Registration Cache
    PPC Registration Database


  3. Start Microsoft Excel.


The first run registration process is run while the Excel splash screen is displayed. Then, Excel is started.
