XL98: "Not Enough Memory" Error Opening File from Excel 5.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, when you open a file that was created in an earlier version of Excel, you may receive the following error message:

Not enough memory
And you are unable to open the file.


CAUSE

This error message may occur when both of the following conditions are true:

  • The file originated in a version of Microsoft Excel earlier than Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.

    -and-


  • The file is corrupted.



RESOLUTION

To open the file in Excel 98, follow these steps:

  1. Start Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0 on a computer other than the computer where the file was created.

    NOTE: If Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0 is not available, you may instead use Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 7.0 or 97.


  2. Open the file.


  3. On the File menu, click Save.


  4. On the File menu, click Close.


You should now be able to open the file in Microsoft Excel 98.
