XL98: "Not Enough Memory" Error Opening Workbook with PivotTable

ID: Q247164

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you open a workbook that contains a PivotTable, you may receive the following error message:

Not enough memory.
When you click OK, you then receive the following error message:
Unable to read file.
NOTE: You may also receive the first error message when you are creating the PivotTable.

CAUSE

These errors occur when both of the following conditions are true:

  • The source of your PivotTable has more than 4,000 unique items in one of the fields.

    -and-

  • You are using that field as a row field in the PivotTable.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, reduce the number of unique items in the source data for the row field to a value that is less than 4,000.

NOTE: 4,000 is only an approximate value which depends on your source data and the way you are configuring your PivotTable.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem does not occur if you create your PivotTable on a computer with Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows. However, if you then try to open this file in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition, you may receive the above error messages.
