ACC: Fixed Format Required with Decimal Point Setting

• Microsoft Access versions 2.0, 7.0, 97

SYMPTOMS

Novice: Requires knowledge of the user interface on single-user computers.

In a table or query, if you set the number of decimal points in a Double Number field without setting the field's Format property to Fixed, the DecimalPlaces property setting will have no effect on the display of the data.

CAUSE

The DecimalPlaces property setting has no effect if the Format property is set to General Number. When the Format property is left blank, it automatically defaults to the General Number setting. Therefore, if you leave the Format property blank, the DecimalPlaces property setting will have no effect.

RESOLUTION

Change the field's Format property setting in the table or query to something other than blank or General Number.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

1. Create a new table.



2. Add the following field to the table:
   

   
         Field Name: Test
            Data Type: Number
            FieldSize: Double
            DecimalPlaces: 3 




3. View the table in Datasheet view.



4. Enter the following number in the Test field:
   

   
         1.12345 

   
   Note that the number is displayed with five decimal places.
