ACC2: "Can't Place Item at This Position" Error Message

SYMPTOMS

Novice: Requires knowledge of the user interface on single-user computers.

When you use a Report Wizard to create a new report, and select only a Date/Time field for the report, you may receive the error message "Can't place item at this position."


RESOLUTION

Select at least one other field in addition to the Date/Time field when you create a new report.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Access version 2.0. This problem no longer occurs in Microsoft Access version 7.0.

Steps to Reproduce Problem


  1. Start Microsoft Access and open the sample database NWIND.MDB.


  2. Create a new report based on the Orders table. Choose the Report Wizards button.


  3. In the "Which Wizard do you want?" box, select Tabular, and then choose the OK button.


  4. In the Available Fields box, select Order Date, and then choose the ">" button. Choose the Finish button. You will receive the error message stated above. Choose OK.


Note that the mouse pointer remains an hourglass, instead of returning to its normal arrow shape. To restore the pointer, follow these steps:
  1. Open any module.


  2. From the View menu, choose Immediate Window.


  3. In the Immediate window, type the following line and then press ENTER:

    DoCmd hourglass false
