ACC: Cannot Import/Link Data in Enabled Database

SYMPTOMS

When you open a database created with an earlier version of Microsoft Access without converting the database, you are unable to link or import data. You see one of the following error messages:

In Microsoft Access 97:

The Get External Data command on the File menu is unavailable.

In Microsoft Access 7.0:
The Import command on the File menu's Get External Data submenu is unavailable.


RESOLUTION

You can either convert the database to the version of Microsoft Access you're opening it with or use the version of Microsoft Access the database was created in to open the database and import the data.


STATUS

This behavior is by design.

Steps to Reproduce Problem


  1. Start Microsoft Access.


  2. Open a database created with a previous version of Microsoft Access.


  3. In the Convert/Open Database box, select the Open Database option and click OK.


  4. In Microsoft Access 7.0:

    Click Get External Data on the File menu. Note that the Import subcommand is unavailable.

    In Microsoft Access 97:

    Click the File menu. Note that the Get External Data command is unavailable.
