ACC: Entry Form Created by Table Wizard Too Large for Screen

ID: Q178108

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Access versions 2.0, 7.0, 97

SYMPTOMS

Novice: Requires knowledge of the user interface on single-user computers.

If you use the Table Wizard to create a new table, and you specify that the wizard create a data entry form as well, you may notice the following:

  • The fields are in one column in the form, no matter how many fields you add.

  • The form may show all the fields, but the form area may be just slightly larger, vertically, than the form's window; this causes an unwanted vertical scroll bar at the right.

CAUSE

If you use the Table Wizard to create a data entry form based on a table that has many fields, the form may become larger than the screen can accommodate.

RESOLUTION

Instead of using the Table Wizard to create a quick form, use the Form Wizard. The Form Wizard gives you more control over the design features of the form.

To run the Form Wizard, follow these steps:

  1. In the Database window, click the Forms tab and click New.

  2. In the New Form box, select the table that you want the form to be based on.

  3. Click Form Wizard, and then click OK.

  4. Add the fields you want from the Available Fields list to the Selected Fields list, and then click Next.

  5. On the second screen of the Form Wizard, select Columnar, and then click Finish.

The Form Wizard creates the form with all the specified fields displayed correctly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Access 2.0, 7.0, and 97.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. On the Tables tab, click New, select Table Wizard, and then click OK.

  2. Under the Sample Tables list, click Mailing List table.

  3. In the Sample Fields, pick the Notes field and add it 20 times.

  4. Click Next through the next screens, letting the wizard choose the defaults.

  5. On the final screen with the checkered flag, click "Enter data into the table using a form the wizard creates for me."

  6. Click Finish.

Note that the form which the Table Wizard creates is larger than the screen and all the fields are in one column.
