ACC: Paste Unavailable After Record Is Copied to Clipboard

ID: Q95323

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Access versions 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 7.0, 97

SYMPTOMS

Novice: Requires knowledge of the user interface on single-user computers.

If two users are simultaneously modifying the same record in the same table, the user who tries to save the record last may receive the following error message:

Data has changed; Operation Stopped

When the user who tried to save the record last clicks the OK button to close this message, the user receives the following error message:
This record has been changed by another user since you started editing it. If you save the record, you will overwrite the changes the other user made.

Copying the changes to the Clipboard will let you look at the values the other user entered, and then paste your changes back in if you decide to make changes.

However, if the second user copies the changes to the Clipboard and then decides to paste in changes, the Paste command is unavailable in Microsoft Access.

CAUSE

Microsoft Access does not support pasting records when the focus is in a control.

RESOLUTION

The user can choose Paste Append to append the record to the table; or, if the user selects the record to paste to, the user can then use the Paste command (or CTRL+V).

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
