Organization Charts Print Without Connecting Lines

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Organization Chart for Windows, version 1.0
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows 95, version 7.0

SYMPTOMS

Organization charts inserted in PowerPoint 95 slides may print without lines connecting the boxes. Shadows may not print either. The lines may not show on screen either.


CAUSE

This situation arises when you upgrade PowerPoint 4.0 to PowerPoint for Windows 95 without upgrading Organization Chart 1.0 to Organization Chart 2.0. Microsoft Organization Chart will not be upgraded under the following circumstances:

  1. You perform a Compact or Typical installation of PowerPoint for Windows 95 or Office for Windows 95.


  2. You perform a custom installation of PowerPoint or Office but do not modify the default selection of features to install.


This can also happen while printing to a HP LaserJet 4 or 5.


WORKAROUNDS

You can get the organization chart to print correctly using the following workarounds:

Method 1: Turn off Black and White Printing

  1. On the File menu, click Print.


  2. Clear the Black And White box in the lower-left corner.


  3. Click OK to complete the print job.


NOTE: The Organization Chart will print correctly, but your entire slide will print as a grayscale representation of how it appears onscreen, so this method really only works well if you have a light slide background.

Method 2: Paste the Organization Chart as a Picture

  1. Select the organization chart, and click Cut on the Edit menu.


  2. On the Edit menu, click Paste Special.


  3. In the list of data types, click Picture.


NOTE: The Organization Chart will now print correctly. However, you will not be able to edit it in Microsoft Organization Chart any more; the chart is just a picture.

Method 3: Upgrade to Organization Chart 2.0

  1. In Windows 95, run Control Panel and double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.


  2. Click PowerPoint for Windows 95 or Office for Windows 95 on the list of installed programs.


  3. Click Add/Remove.


  4. Highlight Shared Applications (if you're running PowerPoint Setup) or Office Tools (if you're running Office Setup).


  5. Click Change Options.


  6. Select Organization Chart.


  7. Click OK.


  8. Click Continue.


  9. Provide whichever disks or compact disc that Setup asks for.

    At this point, if you create a new organization chart, the lines connecting the boxes should print correctly. To update your existing organization charts, do the following:

    1. Select your organization chart.


    2. On the Edit menu, click Organization Chart 1.0.


    3. Click Convert on the menu that appears.


    4. In the list of possible object types, click Organization Chart 2.0.


    5. Click OK.


    6. Double click the organization chart to open it.


    7. Click File, Update Presentation, click File Exit and return to presentation.




Method 4: If printing to a HP LaserJet 4 or 5

  • Go into the Options, Graphics Mode portion of the driver and change HPGL/2 to Raster Mode and print.

  • Enable True Type as Graphics and print.
