CG: Selected Thumbnail Does Not Bring in Correct Image

ID: Q154974

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft ClipArt Gallery, version 1.1
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Macintosh, version 4.x
  • Microsoft Office for the Macintosh, versions 4.2, 4.2.1x

SYMPTOMS

When you select a thumbnail image from the ClipArt Gallery, you may not receive the correct clip art image.

CAUSE

This is a result of corruption in the ClipArt Gallery Index file, Artgalry.idx.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, rebuild the ClipArt Gallery Index file, by deleting or renaming the Artgalry.idx and Artgalry.thm files. Then, reinstall PowerPoint's clip art.

By default, Artgalry.idx and Artgalry.thm are located in the "Macintosh HD:Microsoft" folder.

To Reinstall PowerPoint's clip art (using PowerPoint Setup)

  1. Start the PowerPoint Setup program.

  2. Click Add/Remove.

  3. Clear (remove the "x" from) the box to the left of the Clip Art Files option.

  4. Click Continue.

Setup will delete the clip art files.

  5. Move the Artglary.ini, Artgalry.idx, and Artgalry.thm files to the Trash, and then empty the Trash.

  6. Start the PowerPoint Setup program.

  7. Click Add/Remove.

  8. Under the "Components Not Yet Installed" category, select (put an "x" in) the box to the left of the Clip Art Files choice.

This will install all of the clip art files. If you want to install only specific clip art files, click the triangle to the left to expand the item level. From there, select any items from the list you would like to install.

  9. Click Continue, and provide Setup with whatever disks it asks for.

To reinstall PowerPoint's clip art (using Office Setup)

  1. Start the Office Setup program, and click Add/Remove.

  2. Click the triangle next to Microsoft PowerPoint to expand this level.

  3. Leave the Clip Art Files check box selected, but clear the check boxes for all other components in the installed components list (in the Microsoft PowerPoint level).

Clip Art Files should be the only item selected to be removed. To verify your selection, compare the size of the files (in K) with the information in the "Description: Total space freed up by this installation: XX.X Mbytes" message.

  4. Click Continue.

Setup will delete the clip art files.

  5. Start the Office Setup program again and click Add/Remove.

  6. Under the category Components Not Yet Installed, click the triangle next to Microsoft PowerPoint to expand the level.

  7. Select (put an "x" in) the box to the left of the Clip Art Files component, remove the "x" from those items that you don't want installed.

  8. Click the box to the left of the primary level of this branch (Microsoft PowerPoint).

The box will then have an "x" if all of the subcomponents have been selected, or a "-" if some components have been cleared.

  9. Click Continue. Setup will ask for the required disks.

The next time you run ClipArt Gallery, you will see the following message:
Would you like to add clipart from Office 4.2 now? This may take a few minutes.
Click Yes.

The ClipArt Gallery will then start to decompress the installed clip art files. ClipArt Gallery will build new Artgalry.idx and Artgalry.thm files and register the PowerPoint clip art images in them.
