ID: Q171584

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Graph 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Graph, version 98 Macintosh Edition
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

If you attempt to import a Microsoft Excel Worksheet into Microsoft Graph and specify a named range from the workbook, you receive the following error message:

You must type a name defined in this file, or a range using the format A1:D5
If you click OK, you are returned to the Import Data Options dialog box. If you click Cancel in the Import Data Options dialog box, all existing data in the Graph object is lost. When you return to PowerPoint, there is no data or Graph placeholder.

WORKAROUND

Method 1

Paste the data from Microsoft Excel into Graph. Do not use the Paste Link option because all existing data will be replaced.

Method 2

Specify the exact range of the data in your Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. For example:
A1:D5

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Graph 97 and Microsoft Graph 98 Macintosh Edition.
