CG5: ErrMsg: Cannot Locate Clip

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to insert a clip into your document, you receive the following message:

Cannot Locate Clip
Clip Gallery cannot find the following file:
Directory_path\File_name

Select Update Location to specify the new location of clip files that have been moved from this folder.
Select Remove this Clip to remove this clip preview from Clip Gallery.
Where Directory_path is the drive and directory that the clip image is stored, and File_name is the name of the clip image file.

When you try to update the image location using Update Location, you cannot locate the clip file on your computer or network share.


CAUSE

This is due to one of the following:

  • The clip file no longer exists on your computer or the network share.


  • The clip file has been moved to a different folder.


  • The file name or extension has changed.


This results in a broken media link within the catalog. This results in Clip Gallery being unable to insert the source file into a document.


RESOLUTION

You can successfully resolve this issue by taking the following steps:

Finding the location of the missing clip:

  1. Launch Microsoft Clip Gallery 5 and locate the thumbnail for the missing clip.


  2. Right click on the image and select Clip Properties


  3. Write down the Name of the file as it is listed in the File Information portion of the Clip Properties dialog.


  4. Click the Windows Start Button point to Find and select Files or Folders.


  5. In the Named field type the name of the file


  6. For the Look in field, using the drop down menu select My Computer and click the Find Now button. NOTE: This will search all drives mapped to your computer. If you are on a Network and this search fails to locate the clip's location you will need to contact your Network Administrator for assistance in locating the clip on the Network



Updating the Location of the Clip:
  1. Launch Microsoft Clip Gallery 5, if it is not already running, and locate the thumbnail for the missing clip.


  2. Right click on the image and select Insert.


  3. Click the Update Location button in the right hand side of the dialog box.


  4. For the Look in field, use the drop down menu and browse to the folder where you previously located the clip.


  5. Highlight the clip and click OK



This will update the media link for the file allowing you to successfully insert the clip into your documents.

You can also successfully resolve this issue by removing the thumbnail using the following steps:

Removing the thumbnails from Clip Gallery 5.0:

  1. Launch Clip Gallery 5 and locate the thumbnail for the missing clip.


  2. Right click on the thumbnail and select Insert


  3. In the Cannot Locate Clip click the Remove this Clip button


This will remove the thumbnail and references associated with the clip.
