Draw Allows Selection of Non-Printer-Resident Text Point Size

ID: Q81286

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Draw, version 1.0

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Draw version 1.0, you can use font sizes that are not supported by the active printer. Unsupported font sizes display in all views of Microsoft Draw and Microsoft Word for Windows. When you print the document, the printer driver substitutes the font's nearest available size.

MORE INFORMATION

When you use the Text tool, Draw accepts the font size you select regardless of its availability on the active printer. You do not receive any indication that the font size selected cannot be printed on the active printer.

Note: There is one exception to this behavior. In Draw objects that contain only text (no graphics), the object displays in Word for Windows with the height of the font size that is printable. For example, if you create a text-only Draw object at 72 points and the only available point size for the selected font is 12-point, the object displays in Word truncated at the 12-point height.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. On the tool bar in Word for Windows version 2.0, choose the Microsoft Draw button.

  2. From the Drawing tools palette, choose the Rectangle/Square tool, and draw a box.

  3. Choose the Text tool, and type some text.

  4. Select the text. From the Text menu, choose Font.

  5. From the Font menu, choose a non-scalable, printer-resident font (for example, Courier 12 on the HP LaserJet Series printers).

  6. From the Text menu, choose Size.

  7. From the Size menu, choose Other, and type 72 in the Other Size dialog box. Choose the OK button.

  8. From the File menu, choose Exit and Return to <filename>. Choose the Yes button when prompted to "Update <filename>?".

The text in the Draw object displays at 72 points in the document and in print preview. If you print the document, Word prints the text in the nearest available printer font size.
