Avoiding Setup Problems with Conflicting Extensions

ID: Q125592

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office for the Macintosh, versions 4.2, 4.2.1, 4.2.1a, 4.2.1b
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Macintosh, version 4.0

SUMMARY

To avoid problems when you run Setup for the applications listed above, it is recommended that you restart your Macintosh without extensions before you run Setup (this recommendation applies to running Setup for the first time AND to running it in maintenance mode).

MORE INFORMATION

Some system extensions may conflict with the Microsoft Office Setup program or with one of the Office application Setup programs. To avoid these conflicts, follow the appropriate procedure below before you run Setup.

If you are using System 7.6 or later

  1. From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels, and then choose Extensions Manager.

  2. From the Edit menu choose All Off.

If you are using System 7.5

  1. From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels, and then choose Extensions Manager.

  2. In the Sets box, select the All Off option.

Note that in System 7.5, you may still experience problems if you attempt to turn off extensions by holding down the SHIFT key when you restart your computer.

If you are using a System earlier than System 7.5

  1. Switch to the Finder.

  2. Hold down the SHIFT key and choose Restart from the Special menu.

  3. Continue holding the SHIFT key down until a dialog box appears with the message "Welcome to Macintosh."

A line saying that extensions are off appears in the Welcome to Macintosh dialog box as the machine is started.

NOTE: Some CD-ROM drives require a system extension to run properly. If you are running Setup from a CD-ROM, you might need to turn off other extensions selectively. To selectively turn off extensions except CD-ROM extensions, do the following:

  1. Move the extensions (other than your CD-ROM extensions) from the Extensions folder in the System Folder to an empty folder on the Desktop.

  2. Move the extensions (other than your CD-ROM extensions) from the Control Panels folder in the System Folder to an empty folder on the Desktop.

  3. Restart your Macintosh.
