XL97: "Invalid Use of Null" Error Setting OnRepeat Method

ID: Q157113

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you run a macro that sets the Text and Procedure arguments for the OnRepeat method to Null, you may receive the following error message:

Run-time error '94':
Invalid Use of Null
NOTE: Your macro may run successfully in earlier versions of Microsoft Excel but fail in Microsoft Excel 97.

CAUSE

You cannot use Null for the parameters of the OnRepeat method as a valid means to reset the Repeat command. The Text and Procedure parameters require a String value. This behavior is by design.

In earlier versions of Microsoft Excel, you can set the parameters of the OnRepeat method to Null and not receive an error message. If you set the OnRepeat argument to Null, you reset the action that occurs when the user selects the Repeat command on the Edit menu (or presses CTRL+Y).

The following macro runs successfully in Microsoft Excel versions 5.0 and 7.0 but fails in Microsoft Excel 97:

Sub Test()

     MsgBox "Hello World!"

     'Reset the Repeat command
     Application.OnRepeat Text:=Null, Procedure:=Null

End Sub
To correct this problem so that the macro runs without error, set the OnRepeat arguments to empty string values instead of Null:

Sub Test()

     MsgBox "Hello World!"

     'Reset the Repeat command
     Application.OnRepeat Text:="", Procedure:=""

End Sub
