XL: Error Inserting a Module Sheet in a Workbook

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 7.0 or 5.0, when you attempt to insert a module sheet into a workbook, you may receive the following error message:

Can't find project or library
When you then click OK, the References dialog box appears. In the References dialog box, under Available References, the reference to the Microsoft Office 8.0 Object Library is selected and is listed as "Missing".

NOTE: This problem may also occur when you attempt to record a macro, and then store the recorded macro in the active workbook.


CAUSE

This problem may occur if all of the following conditions are true:

  • In Microsoft Excel 97, you create a workbook and save it in the "Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 Workbook" format.


    • -and-

  • The workbook has at least one module sheet in it.


    • -and-

  • In Microsoft Excel 5.0 or 7.0, you insert a module sheet in the workbook.



WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do the following:

  1. When the error message appears, click OK.


  2. When the References dialog box appears, clear the check box next to:
    MISSING: Microsoft Office 8.0 Object Library


  3. Click OK.


You can now insert a module sheet into your workbook.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem no longer occurs in Microsoft Excel 2000.


MORE INFORMATION

When you save a Microsoft Excel 97 workbook in an earlier version file format, Microsoft Excel saves general modules as module sheets in the workbook. However, Microsoft Excel does not save the following items:

  • Code that is associated with an object module


  • Forms


  • Class modules


When you save a workbook with buttons, toolbar buttons, menus, and other controls that have assigned macros in an earlier version file format, these items still work correctly because the macros that are assigned to them are subroutines that are stored in general modules with specific names.
