PPT: Unable to Reference Renamed and Grouped Objects by Name

ID: Q229957

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97 For Windows
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

If you rename an object on a PowerPoint slide and then group that item with another item, the group will claim the name of the renamed object; however, the group cannnot be referenced by the same name.

For example: If you rename an oval on the slide, and then group it with a rectangle, the resulting group will be given the same name as the oval; however, you will not be able to reference the group using the name of the oval.

CAUSE

This problem is caused by the naming convention used by the Microsoft Office Drawing layer for objects that are grouped and ungrouped. The group assumes the name of the first shape in the group. If the group is ungrouped, the first shape takes on the name of the group.

This problem is a limitation of the Office Drawing Layer object model.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
