Paintbrush May Crash with Insufficient Memory

ID: Q67514

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Paintbrush for MS-DOS, version 4.0

SUMMARY

Paintbrush 4.0 requires a minimum of about 460K. PBRUSH.EXE itself is roughly 360K, and Frieze is around 37K. In 16-color modes, if there is less than about 460K free, Paintbrush loads but has no memory to create an image. You cannot load or create an image of any size if this happens. In 2-color modes, you have about 400K before running out of memory. Exact memory requirements vary between different modes.

If the memory drops below about 380K in ANY mode, Paintbrush may load incorrectly and crash the system. Paintbrush does not give an error message; however, only some of the tools appear in the Toolbox and the program usually crashes.

If memory is significantly below 380K, Paintbrush displays the error message "COULD NOT INIT VIRTUAL MEMORY" even if the TMP environment variable is set.
