In Low Memory Conditions, Screen Not Refreshed for Some Menus

ID: Q92629

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Visual Basic Standard and Professional Editions for MS-DOS, version 1.0

SUMMARY

In low memory conditions (around 350K conventional MS-DOS memory), you may notice that when certain menus are dropped down that the region of the screen behind them is not refreshed. You see a large black area where the menu should be found.

The screen is refreshed if you select a menu item or press the ESC key.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a design limitation in Microsoft Visual Basic for MS-DOS, version 1.0. We are researching this limitation and will post more information as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

Due to the low memory conditions and inherent limits within the environment and in applications using menus, it was decided that this alternative of not immediately updating the screen was preferable to not being able to drop down the menus at all.
