Disk not ready Error Saving File After Change to Invalid Drive

SYMPTOMS

After executing the CHDRIVE statement in code to change the current drive to one that has no disk in it, attempting to save your program results in the following error message:

Disk not ready
You can't save the program to a valid drive.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, insert a disk into the drive that needs a disk, or in the Immediate window, use the CHDRIVE statement to change the current drive to a valid drive.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Standard and Professional Editions of Microsoft Visual Basic version 1.0 for MS-DOS. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Start VBDOS.EXE.


  2. In the Immediate window, type the following and press the ENTER key:
    CHDRIVE "A:" 'Make sure there is no disk in drive A


  3. From the File menu, choose the "Save File As..." menu item, type in a file name, and then press the ENTER key. Make sure you specify a valid drive.


  4. The Disk not ready dialog box pops up even though you tried to save the file to a valid drive.


  5. Choose the Cancel button to continue.
