PRB: "Initialization of LinkView Failed" Error

SYMPTOMS

While attempting to view the links on a file in your Web project, you receive one of the following errors:

Initialization of the Link View Failed

-or-

Cannot create or view this document

-or-

Invalid Class String

Clicking OK displays a second dialog box that says the following:

Unable to load the Link View components. Please reinstall Visual InterDev and try again.

CAUSE

The LinkView DLLs are not registered correctly or are not in the correct directory.

RESOLUTION

Make sure the following DLLs are located in the folder "\DevStudio\MSDesigners" and that each one is properly registered:

Mdtws.dll

Mdtwslb.dll

Mdturet.dll

To register the files use Regsvr32. For example, to register Mdtws.dll, select Run from the Start menu and type the following into the dialog box:

regsvr32 "c:\Program Files\DevStudio\MSDesigners\mdtws.dll"

STATUS

This problem has been resolved in Visual InterDev 6.0.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

Open a Web project in Visual InterDev.

Right-click on an .htm file in your project.

Select View Links from the Shortcut menu.

If the LinkView DLLs are not properly registered, one of the errors listed in the SYMPTOMS section will appear.
