CAUSEA bug in the VBScript.dll is one cause of this problem. There is a line in the VBScript.dll where a line continuation character (_) causes the internal color parser to hang when trying to determine what part of the text or line of code should be color coded. RESOLUTIONThe fix to the VBScript.dll crash can be obtained by loading version 5 of the script libraries. You can download the current versions of VBScript.dll from http://www.msdn.microsoft.com.
