PRB: Problems Running MSDN Library from a Network Installation

ID: Q196440

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0
  • MSDN Library

SYMPTOMS

This article focuses on network installations of the MSDN Library. This can be through a shared network CD-ROM drive or hard drive. After installing the MSDN Library,, the following error might occur when you try to view a topic that is not located on disc 1:

Internet Explorer cannot open the site
mk:@MSITStore:\\xyz\xyz\xyz.chm:://xyz/xyz/xyz.htm
1% could not be found

CAUSE

On a network installation, the MSDN Library returns to the same network location to find the data that is located on all subsequent discs.

RESOLUTION

Copy the contents of all the CD-ROMS to a place on you server by doing the following:

  1. Create a directory on your server, and name it (for example, MSDNOCT98).

  2. Copy the contents of disk 1 to this directory.

  3. Copy the contents of disk 2 to the same directory.

    NOTE: Discs 1 and 2 have a directory called MSDN. When you try to copy the contents of disk 2 to the same directory, you are prompted to replace any duplicates. Click NO because there should not be any duplicate files.

  4. If you are installing MSDN Visual Studio 6.0, or 6.0a, skip to step 5. If you are installing MSDN October 1998, repeat step 3 for Disc 3.

  5. Once you are finished, you can map a drive to the directory and install from there. You do not need the CDs again.
